As Vermont's Largest Pickleball and Tennis Retailer, we are all about matching players with the right gear to hit the court! With Pickleball on the rise, the most common questions from customers we get are about which type of paddle they should get. There are three distinct models of Pickleball paddles: Elongated, Classic and Widebody. In this post we break down what differentiates each type of paddle and what kind of players each are ideal for.
Elongated Paddles
Elongated paddles are longer than most paddles, allowing them to have greater reach, power and spin.
Since they are longer, they have a smaller and higher sweet spot (where players experience optimal contact) than other paddles. With a smaller sweet spot, Elongated paddles are less forgiving.
Elongated paddles are preferred by advanced and professional players, who are less concerned about the size of the sweet spot, but more focused on power and spin. The added power also makes them ideal for offensive players who are further from the net and looking to hit the ball farther.
Classic or Standard Paddles
Classic paddles are a ‘Jack of All Trades’ as they perform well in all areas, but do not excel in one particular area. They are not as long as Elongated paddles or wide as Widebody paddles. If you are unsure of what you are looking for, a Classic paddle is your safest option.
Widebody Paddles
Widebody paddles are shorter and wider than other paddles, which makes them more forgiving and have larger sweetspots. Since they are shorter and wider, they have less reach and power than other paddles.
Widebody paddles are recommended for beginners, since their wide width allows for these paddles to be more forgiving and reduces errors. Widebody paddles are also ideal for defensive players who are closer to the net and less concerned about how far they can hit the ball.
